Small Businesses And Social Media

This month's issue of flyte log is entitled Does Your Small Business Really Need a Social Media Strategy? I bring this up because so many small business owners are still wondering if they really need search engine optimization or a blog...now we're asking them to consider the value of a LinkedIn account, or a Facebook page, or even Twittering? It seems a bit much.

Should You Start Your Own Business?

If you’ve ever thought about starting your own business, now may be as good a time as any. Let’s face it, the economy is all over the place; there’s no such thing as a “job for life” nowadays; and people are working longer and retiring later just so they can afford to live. Combine that with the expectancy of bosses that you work longer hours without any extra compensation, and you might just feel that the time to start your own business is edging ever closer.

The Facts About Online Advertising

As noted by Andy Beal earlier today there appears to be some unnecessary alarmism regarding the current state on online ad spends. I say unnecessary because as we have noted on another occasion the media really has a twisted sense of when the sky is falling.

cmypitch - Social Network For Small Businesses

cmypitch is a social network for small and medium businesses. It is essentially a startup that tries to help your company connect with people who can help your business. I love the concept, especially since its heavy on video. Its easy to use, content rich and the concept is good. Its still very new so we'll see where it goes, but its worth checking out, especially if you're a small or medium0sized business.

You Can Create Publicity Without A PR Firm

I came across a great article today by Jason Calacanis on the topic of PR for startups.  Jason Calacanis is founder and CEO of Mahalo, but you probably would better know him as the the guy behing Weblogs, Inc.  In any case, he’s accomplished, and knows a thing or two about getting visibility for a startup.

LinkedIn Mixes Old Media And New

While I am not old by any stretch of the imagination, I definitely fall on the "I did not grow up with the internet" side of the ledger. All that means is that I have needed to adapt how I do business to incorporate blogging and social media among other "unnatural" acts. In fact, for a good portion of my career I had to depend on newspapers for "up-to-date" business information and I have grown fond of several sources that have themselves had to adapt to the internet economy.

Washington Tax Laws Affect Small Businesses

The growth of Internet sales is causing some interesting tax issues for small business owners and casual sellers. My bookkeeper has spent hours on the phone with the IRS trying to figure the best way to handle the new Washington State tax regulations that went into effect July 1, 2008. You see, the system for local retail sales tax in the State of Washington has gone from an origin-based system to a destination-based system. Basically, how you tax goods now depends on where the product is shipped to, not on where the product comes from.

Find People with Twitter Directory Twellow

Much has been written in recent months about the allure of Twitter and why people stick with it through thick and thin.

Social Media and Internal Issues

My dad used to tell me the main reason most relationships don’t work out is that one or both of the people involved is looking for the other person as the solution to their problems. His notion was that if you were happy by yourself, you’d likely be be happy with who you are partnered with.
