FSB Tallies Cost Of Crime To Small Businesses

Average victim lost £2,900 in last year

It’s time again for small businesses in the UK to consider the cost and aesthetics of two-inch glass and a collection of security cameras.  New stats show that small businesses that were hit by crime in the last year lost an average of

£2,900, making such options seem attractive in some respects.

Federation of Small BusinessesIndeed, the Federation of Small Businesses found that 64 percent of the small businesses it surveyed have been victims of crime, which means the problem is quite widespread.

It appears that small business owners don’t believe authorities are likely to put things right after the fact, either.  The FSB discovered that 39 percent of victims don’t even report crimes because they either believe police and prosecutors won’t accomplish much or won’t be interested.

So it’s a good idea for small business owners to take whatever precautions are practical.  The FSB wants to see "Neighbourhood Policing Teams" look out for a wider range of establishments, too.

Other ideas proposed by the FSB then involve "[i]ncluding crimes against business in all Community Safety Partnerships Annual Strategic Assessments" and "[c]reating a single, national definition for crimes against business to make it simpler for the police to record crime."

Let’s hope these suggestions are able to improve the situation.
