Members Of Gen Y Identified As Loyal Shoppers

Demographic may be worth pursuing

It’s common enough for people’s earning power to increase as they age, and as a result, older individuals can make better consumers.  Have a care for the opinions of young people, though, as new Hitwise data suggests that they can be loyal customers.

Sandra Hanchard took a look at the shopping habits of Australians, and specifically, Australians who were shopping for appliances and electronics.  She wrote, "18-24 year olds were 44% more likely than the online average to be returning visitors to Appliances and Electronics websites . . ."

Hanchard then continued, "Even though Gen Ys were amongst the hardest hit group by economic pressures, they were still the most engaged online researchers in one of the most popular online retail categories . . ."

This is something small business owners should take into consideration when thinking about site designs and/or marketing campaigns.  Not that anyone should alienate an existing customer base in order to appeal to youngsters, but reaching both would certainly be beneficial.

Or you could take this data and head in the other direction.  Hanchard pointed out that Australian appliance and electronics companies have lots of room for improvement in terms of appealing to older, more affluent individuals.
