Odd Mail Items May Have Maximum Effect

Make your stamps count

When checking the mail, personal letters are among the first items I seek out.  Then come magazines, followed by bills.  Just about everything else gets tossed after a quick glance.  So, if you’re sending tangible things to potential customers, consider stepping to the front of the figurative line by using oddly-shaped objects.

Larger items are the very first things most people look at, after all.  This is perhaps even more true when they aren’t expecting a delivery, and something other than a brown box is bound to get lots of attention.

Leo Quinn and Cathy Stucker call this category of stuff "lumpy mail."  Stucker writes, "Lumpy mail may be sent in an envelope or package, but often it is sent with no packaging at all.  Leo has sent bank bags, sports bottles, baby bottles and large rubber balls through the mail with only stamps."

It might be helpful to consider the issues of cleanliness and durability, of course, and for the sake of your bank balance, you may not want to mass mail odd things.  But if you sell horse accessories and know about a neighborhood of rich racing fanatics, for example, have at it.  Or use lumpy mail as a way to grab the attention of good customers who haven’t stopped by in a while.

Trashcans and shredders pose very big threats to other things the Post Office handles.

  1. Great idea. We are great believers in sending schwag through the mail rather than investing in advertising. I can’t tell you how many offices I’ve walked into and seen our items.
