Small Businesses Add Jobs In April

Intuit talks higher wages, more hours worked, as well

April apparently worked out pretty well for a lot of folks who filled out applications at small businesses.  And for people who already worked for the companies, too.  New data indicates that small businesses created 66,000 new jobs in April, all the while managing to increase wages and hours worked.

Intuit found that the creation of 66,000 jobs represents an increase in small business employment of 0.33 percent.  The company determined that 300,000 jobs have been created since June of last year, too, which is impressive.

As for the wage and workweek info, Intuit said in a statement, "Compensation grew by 0.5 percent in April and now is $2,607 per month, compared to $2,595 per month in March.  Monthly hours worked were up by 0.5 percent in April, to 105.7 hours compared to 105.1 in March."

Let’s hope these developments turn into proper trends.  A few more months of this would go a long way towards putting small businesses’ employees back on a normal earnings track, and subsequently signal that small businesses have returned to a good groove.

The Intuit data comes from about 55,000 small businesses, by the way, and so should be pretty reliable.

  1. The hiring of 66,000 temporary government workers to conduct the 2010 census helped payroll growth last month. But private employers — backbone of the economy — boosted jobs, too.
