Everyone knows that Black Friday is one of the most important days of the year for retailers. With billions of dollars in sales on the line, companies like Sears, Amazon, Macy’s, Best Buy, Walmart, and even Apple exert a huge amount of effort to bring in customers and entice them with deals ranging from too-good-to-be-true to just okay. As widely varied as the retailers who reap the Black Friday harvest are, though, they tend to have one thing in common: size.

As Thanksgiving approaches, so does the biggest shopping day of the year. The madness of Black Friday brings crazy deals to retail outlets big and small, but it usually seems like the national stores get all the attention on that Friday.For the second year, the Saturday following Black Friday had been declared "Small Business Saturday."The day is sponsored by American Express, who launched the initiative in 2010 to help smaller retailers grab a piece of the biggest shopping weekend of the year.
NRF Forecasts 138M People Will Shop Black Friday Weekend

Small business owners who own brick-and-mortar shops and don't choose to close up in the face of potentially out-of-control mobs should see more shoppers this Black Friday weekend than last. The National Retail Federation determined that 138 million consumers are interested in heading out, which represents a slight increase compared to 2009.

What many people regard as the official start of the holiday shopping season went quite well, according to statistics from comScore. Indeed - although it's too early to tell for sure - Black Friday appeared to point the way towards retail sites experiencing a better season this year than last.
Has Online Shopping Already Peaked for the Year?

I would have thought that online shopping would peak on Cyber Monday or Black Friday, but it was actually a Sunday - November 30th, that the most people got online and shopped, at least in the UK. This information comes from Hitwise who has provided data about UK Internet traffic to shopping and classifieds sites:

Well, here's a nice surprise: Black Friday's come and gone, and the business world didn't end. In fact, businesses seem to have done all right, with a new comScore report putting the eCommerce community in a better position than many people had anticipated.

The average Black Friday corresponds to around-the-store lines before the sun rises. Now, of course, we seem to be in a recession, but that may make November 28th an even more profitable time for every business that has something to sell.
