Discover Sees Small Business Confidence Decrease

Ironic as it may sound, pessimists arguably have something to celebrate today.  The latest Discover Small Business Watch figures show that small business owners' confidence dropped in March, creating a setback on the road to economic recovery.

Discover Small Business Watch Index Holds Steady-ish

The transition from January to December didn't leave the average small business owner feeling much more confident about the future, according to new data from Discover.  Instead, the Discover Small Business Watch index dropped a little on a month-over-month basis, signaling a decline in optimism.The good news is that the drop wasn't huge.  The Index just dipped from 91.0 in January to 90.2 this month, which sounds pretty manageable.

Small Business Confidence Up In November

Economic confidence among U.S. small business owners continued to improve in November, according to the Discover Small Business Watch.The monthly index rose to 87.2 in November, up 3 points from 84.2 in October – the third consecutive monthly gain, and nearly 11 points higher than a year ago.

Discover Claims Slight Uptick In Small Biz Confidence

As usual, it'll probably be quite a while before anyone can say for sure whether the economy took a turn for the worse or better this month.  But the latest Discover Small Business Watch report at least created the possibility that conditions improved.

Falloff In Small Biz Confidence Recorded

Whatever silver linings the recession's created apparently became much harder to find this month.  The latest Discover Small Business Watch report indicated that the average small business owners' confidence fell by quite a lot between July and August.Discover, which based its conclusions on a survey involving 750 small business owners, found that the drop in confidence qualified as "the largest one-month decline since November 2009."

Small Biz Owners See Second Recession Coming

While everyone should be careful not to make this a self-fulfilling prophecy, small business owners should also prepare for a second recession, according to a new survey.  In fact, according to the survey, most small business owners are probably already making themselves ready, since 75 percent of them believe a second recession's on the way.

The people running the Discover Small Business Watch had to look a ways down in order to see October numbers relating to small business owners' outlook.  It seems that the overall index dropped by a bit, and answers to more specific survey questions weren't encouraging, either.

August is a nice month.  Temperatures seem more bearable, kids are going back to school, and, at least this year, the economic outlook of small business owners is heading up.
