Starting a business can be tough in this economy. As you're probably well aware, it's tough to raise capital to get off the ground. People don't want to invest, particularly in something has yet to be proven successful. This might be one reason that opening a franchise could prove to be a more reachable goal. While still not a sure shot, there are some areas that are looking more favorable than others.
Women-Owned Franchise Numbers on the Rise

Franchise consultants FranNet issues a release today discussing trends in women-owned franchises. They cited reports from the International Franchise Association, which found that women have founded 23 franchise systems in the U.S., and within a 10 year span, women-owned franchises increased nearly 17%.

The Entrepreneur's Source along with Fifth Third Bank, the Women's Business Development Center, and the Illinois Small Business Development Center, is hosting a free franchise event in Chicago. The purpose of the event is to educate potential business owners about the opportunities available to them in franchises. Over 60 of the top franchises in the country will have displays and be ready to answer questions.
