Small Business Lending Stabilizing

Lending to small firms by U.S. financial institutions continued to decline, but began to stabilize in some loan size categories over the 2009-2010 period, according to a report from the Small Business Administration Office of the Advocacy. The study finds that small business lending dropped by 6.2 percent, less than the 8.9 percent drop experienced in large firm lending over the 2009-2010 period. GDP has turned upward, and business lending may follow the pattern of other recessions, in which commercial and industrial lending grew only after recovery was well under way.

I had the opportunity to get a sneak peek behind the curtain of the new and improved Small Business Administration (SBA) website late last year and I can tell you, I was very pleased with what I saw. The site has since gone live and it does not disappoint. Finally, it is a resource that will be helpful to both people who are thinking about starting a business and those who have been managing a small business for a while. Let’s just say the old site didn’t quite meet that objective.

The U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of the Advocacy has released a report on the challenging economic conditions of 2009 that found by the end of the year, small businesses found room for optimism.“In the beginning of 2009 many small businesses felt as if they were at the brink, not knowing how or if they would survive,” said Chief Counsel for Advocacy Winslow Sargeant.
SBA Releases Grants To Small Business Development Centers

The first six of a series of grants to Small Business Development Centers around the country to expand access to programs to help entrepreneurs start or grow their businesses and create jobs were announced today by Deputy Administrator Marie Johns of the U.S. Small Business Administration. These first six grants are part of $50 million in funding included in the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 signed by the President last September.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has introduced a newly re-designed SBA website.The new site features SBA Direct, a new online tool with a variety of personalization features to help small businesses. “With the launch of the new SBA.gov, we have reached a significant milestone in how the agency has evolved in using interactive web tools, social media and blogs to engage with, and better meet the needs of small business owners,” said SBA Administrator, Karen Mills.

The availability, speed and price of broadband services vary significantly between metro area and rural businesses, according to a new study released by the Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy.The study found when prices are held constant, rural small businesses get less service compared with metro small businesses. When services are held constant, rural small businesses pay higher prices than metro small businesses.
SBA Offering New Programs For Veteran Entrepreneurs

The U.S. Small Business Administration and Syracuse University are expanding their Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) to a seventh school, Louisiana State University, and launching two new entrepreneurship programs for women veterans and National Guard and Reserve members and their families.
