A Starting Point for the Hiring Process

Getting on the right track for finding employees you want

Finding the right people to fill certain positions within your business can sometimes seem hopeless.

The hiring process can take its toll on your patience as well as your budget, but there are precautions that you can take to ease the process along and minimize headaches.

Paying Close Attention to Resumes

Before getting potential employees in the door for an interview, really look at their resume. Does it contain specific skills that you need out of them?

If it does, try and judge if the rest of the resume makes sense within the context of those skills. Beieve it or not, job candidates often "fluff up" their resumes. Dan Morrill goes into resume culling in this ManagerNewz article.

Interviews

You need to have an interview strategy. You can always perfect it in time, but it is good to have a basically set process for interviewing job candidates.

Have a specific list of questions that you ask all interviewees. Prepare a separate list that is personalized for each candidate. Come up with an activity for them to demonstrate their skillset. This can help you get a feel about how genuine their resumes actually are. Peak Search has a great list of potential questions to help you get started with this strategy.

Narrowing Down

Hopefully your interview process will have gone well and you will be in the position to narrow down the candidates.

Let's say you have one position open and you have three candidates that you like equally. How do you decide which one to hire? I'm afraid there is just no text-book answer for this. As with many other aspects of business you have to trust your gut. If you've gotten this far, you're likely familar with the art off risk taking.

Just treat the ones you don't hire with the same amount of respect as the one you do. You never know how the new recruit is going to work out. If you stay on good terms with the people you had to turn away, they may still be interested in your company at a later date.

Finding the right workers for your company isn't always easy, but if you have a clear picture of what you want from an employee, you'll be getting off on the right foot in the hiring process.
