Don't Let Social Media Marketing Work Against You

Steps you can take for an effective campaign

Social media marketing can be a great boost to your business, but just the same it can be a nail in your coffin. If you are going to travel down its path, you're going to have to put some time and effort into it.

If you are serious about earning business from the social networks, there are several factors that need to be taken into consideration.

Consistency

One of the most important aspects of social media marketing is staying consistent among social networks.

"Branding is important when it comes to social media marketing. If you are trying to use social media sites for exposure and traffic not only is it important to brand your domain name, but it is also important to brand your user name by keeping it consistent throughout all social sites", says popular marketing consultant Neil Patel.

Many social media users use several sites like MySpace, Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, YouTube, etc. Staying consistent will burn your brand into their memories. This brings me to the next point.

Quantity

There are quite a few social sites out there. It seems like more every day. It is a good idea to have a presence on as many of these as possible, but don't overwhelm yourself. Be sure to keep up with all of the ones you have an account with.

If necessary, assign one or more of your employees to keep up with each account on a daily basis. You don't want to leave untouched pages out there, because potential customers may come across them and you may appear that you don't care about their demographic or that you are lazy. You never want your brand to be reflected in a negative light.

Reputation

Just as you wouldn't want untouched pages out there, you wouldn't want to have the "wrong crowd" in your network of friends. This can also reflect poorly on your brand. I have discussed this in a previous article.

Participation

Not only do you want to make sure your pages are kept up, you need to actually get involved in the community, otherwise you're just going to come off as an advertisement.

"Users in these communities are looking for participation and contribution," says SiteLogic founder Matt Bailey. "And no – advertising your product and dropping links are not considered participation. Contribution is in the form of thoughts, opinions, and discussion."

This will show potential customers that you are more than just a business. You are a human being that can relate to them. Basically, you are building trust for your brand.

As social networks continue to gain popularity, the potential for new business is seemingly endless. Just go about it properly to ensure that it works for you rather than against you.

Social Media Use

These are good suggestions. Keeping up with all the pages is time consuming so for a single person business it is difficult to deal with more than a few of these services. How often do you recommend updating the pages?

How Often Should You Update them?

If you have employees that can take responsibility for this, I would suggest they at least check on the pages on a daily basis, if not for anything else, just to keep up with comments. If you are a one-person business, you really just need to do so when you have time. I wouldn't want to go more than a week without at least checking in on the pages. As far as updating them... There would be a lot of business-specific variables to consider. Are you offering new specials? Have you released a new product? I don't think there is a concrete answer to how often you should "update" your pages. I would just say keep them up to date with what you are trying to promote with them. While it is important to keep you pages up to date, you really want to spend just as much time, probably even more getting involved with the community.

My opinion

For a one person business I think it  would be better to focus yourself on 2-3 social sites .It is not possible for single man to update on every media site.

Important Requirements

The ultimate goal of this networking activity would be traffic to your website and finally, sales conversion. It takes time, patience and effort, but it can be done. Actually many marketers have found success with this method.

Two important requirements to succeed are that you must contribute and post thoughtful comments on highly visited social media and networking sites with as many members as you can within your selected communities and you must not give the impression that you are selling something.

Correct

Absolutely right.

i don't agree

Well one of the reasons of using social media site is traffic but is it the sole reason or is it the most important reason.I don't think so. As a small business owner your main focus should be to make relationships ,and win trust of the people to whom you come in contact. On internet it is not traffic that sells the product but it is trust and relationships that make you a better salesman.

Update

Hi,

Can you let me know how often i should update my SN account as i have few sites like Acomplia, Blue pills ...ect and it won't be possible for me to update them regularly. So is there any time frame like once a week or in 15 days... i should update me account and update everything.

Your assiatance will be highly appreciated and will help me a lot.

Regards

Katie

It depends...

Hi Katie, I don't think there is a real science to it. The main thing is really to just keep them up to date with what you intend to use them for. I personally would not want to wait longer than a week before at least looking at them and making sure they're how I want them. The networking with others is the most important part.

You are right....

I knew this, but I have been lazy at times because I have links for these sites under a different name, that is, before I decided to brand my name. So I need to spend time subscribing to these places and brand my own name for consistency sake. Kansas City SEO

RE: You are right...

Definitely a good idea, Kimberly. It is easy to forget about them and stay inconsistent.
