Stay Focused to Increase Productivity

Don't Overload Your Brain

The University of Oregon conducted an interesting study back in July looking at how the human brain breaks down short term memory. They found that the average person is aware of about only 4 things at once.

This is information that you can use to help you stay focused when managing your business. You may consider yourself to be above average, but why not try using this as a guideline?

You've more than likely got a ton of projects that you're itching to get done, but don't get ahead of yourself or you'll end up with more than you can handle.

Time is always a factor, so you'll need to utilize it wisely, but try to stick to as few things as possible at a time. This may sound like a bad idea at first, but you'll probably find that the less you take on at once, the faster you'll get the project(s) done, and then you can move on to the next task.

If you have too much to get done, and it is in your budget, maybe it is time to think about hiring some new help. If it is not in your budget, use the same approach when assigning projects to your current employees. Keep them focused on few things at a time and let them move on when the initial tasks are complete.

Information overload is one of the topics that will be discussed at the Microsoft Business Summit in March. I suggest checking that out.

"Even though people with high IQs can think about more things at once, there are not guarantees about how good those memories might be," says OU Professor Edward Awh.

Staying focused will allow you to maxize your productivity, and a more productive business tends to attract more customers.
