The Top Five Content Management Systems

Are you happy with yours?

CMS Matrix has a wonderful tool that allows you to compare features from one content management system to the next.

They have over 850 systems listed and the tool allows you to select any number of them and compare them side by side in areas such as system requirements, security, support, ease-of-use, performance, management, interoperability, flexibility, built-in applications, and commerce.

Each of those categories is broken up into a number of sub-categories making for a very detailed look at what each CMS excels in and what it doesn't.

We're Drupal fans here at SmallBusinessNewz. In fact, that is what I'm using to share this article.

Instead of comparing 850 content management systems, I thought I would take a look at five of the more popular ones and see how they stack up against each other according to CMS Matrix's tool.

Basd on the number of featues that are either included with each CMS or are available via a free add-on, the ones I looked at rank in the following order:

1. Drupal

2. Joomla!

3. Basecamp from 37signals

4. Wordpress

5. Lotus from IBM

This is not to say that Drupal is the only choice for you. Take a look at the features of each and compare them with the needs of your business. Evaluate what you are looking for in a content management system.

Like I said, there are 850 different ones listed on that site alone. There may be one out there that blows them all out of the water.

What do you use as a content management system? Are you happy with it?

It's been wordpress...

We've must've done 25 wordpress installs in the past month... I've become a big fan of it, but it is limited in some of its features.  While there are a ton of plugins available, shopping carts and custom databases are things you may need to keep seperate from your installations.

Sometimes it's about having fewer features

I agree that Drupal is great, but more features means more complexity. CMS Made Simple makes things easier for both the web designer and the end user. Of course, I don't think I'd want to build a site like SmallBusinessNewz with it.

So far, it's Joomla for us

At Total Hosting, we've done dozens of sites based on Joomla, and have hundreds of customers using it on a DIY-basis.  Not too many with Drupal.

What made you choose it over the others for your site? Would like to see a little more detail than just the list, especially when talking about a product selected over another.

I will probably install Drupal in my sandbox just to figure out if it's worth switching over to.  Especially now that Joomla 1.5 is finally out.

Thanks!

Feature Comparison

Pesto, check out the comparison tool at CMS Matrix, it breaks each down by features. It's very helpful. http://www.cmsmatrix.org/

CMS for Windows/ASP

Are there any good CMS for Windows?

Drupal rocks!

My web development business evaluated loads of CMS and found drupal to be the best all round in terms of features & flexibility. I agree this can make it over complicated, and we actually ended up developing our own as a result.

Now we've recently started using it again, and version 5 (we're on 5.7) is even better. We really only use it for lower end sites, but it enables us to offer a wealth of features for very little money. It's simple enough to customise and there are some really nice looking standard themes for those on a really tight budget.

I've started doing a few community sites using drupal and it's very rewarding being able to offer the power hitherto restricted to big companies to these organisations. Might have to check out the alternatives, though, now you've pointed out CMS Matrix...

btw - great site guys - I wish I had time to read it all!

Commercial CMS Sotfware

CMS plays a very crucial role in any organization. One of the biggest issues with free CMS is support. Commercial ones will cost a little but might be worth while and save lot of quality time.
