Study: Artisans' Future so Bright, They Gotta Wear Shades

Things are going great...and they're only getting better.

A study from Intuit, authored by the Institute for the Future, is saying that artisans will be the brightest stars in the future of small business.

Basically they're saying that these "next generation" artisans will be able to utilize technology in the next ten years as it continues to advance to "amplify their reach and capabilities."

Three trends we are likely to see according to the study are:

- Brain Meets Brawn to Create Opportunities for Small Business - The emergence of barbell-like economic structures will drive new business collaborations, creating greater opportunity and profitability for small business.

- Barriers Down, Small Business Opportunities Up - Access to big business infrastructure will expand, making their sophisticated technologies available to small and personal businesses, at lower risk, with a variable cost structure.

- The Next Wave of Globalization Will be Driven by Small Business - Muted trade barriers, improved technology, and professional and social networks across borders will facilitate small business access to new markets.

"Like their medieval predecessors in pre-industrial Europe and Asia, these next-gen artisans will ply their trade outside the walls of big business, making a living with their craftsmanship and knowledge," says co-author of the study, Steve King.

"But there also will be marked differences. In many cases, brain will meet brawn; software and technology will replace hard iron and hard labor. As a result, small businesses will increasingly serve international markets and customers as easily as they serve their local customers today," he added.

While some are predicting doom for the small business online, small business craftsmen can put on their shades, because their future looks bright.

Time to get your hands dirty

I really don't see this as a case of brains meets brawn.  It's really a case of who wants to get their hands dirty.

When I left school everyone (and their best friends brother) was getting into IT.  You get to sit in an airconditioned office all day and punch out bits of brilliance.  Great work if you can get it.  But these same people have become almost afraid of getting their hands dirty.

Today some of the most indemand and best paying professions include plumbing and electrical work.  Not exactly a glamour profession, but one that is always in demand and is increasingly paying better.

I fail to see how technology will change anything on this front.  It really is the oldest case of business - supply and demand.

You May be right...

Only time will tell the accuracy of the study's trend predictions. Of course, supply and demand will always be a factor.

Brawn?

Yeah I agree, I think brawn isnt the best choice of words here. Maybe more like Physical Labor uses Creative Technology to ease the Load of  Laborious Tasks.

I love technology and the internet infrastructure. I love the possiblities but there will never be a replacement for the use of our hands and for interaction amongst people face to face. I believe we need to build systems that will continue to encourage growth in both sectors in order to be successful. Techies can not for a second think they got it all figured out and the world will be all computerzied and mechanical engines do it all. LOL that's never going to happen.

If it were to happen could you imagine how anything handmade might actually be worth something... again. I would like to see that happen. Maybe, Robert you'll be the one laughing all the way to the bank.
