Federal Stimulus Plan Proposes Help

History says the stimulus should work

A plan passed by Congress will have an impact, likely a positive one, on small businesses.

It's not often the words "I'm from the government and I'm here to help" prove to be more than a cringeworthy, cold-shiver of a promise. For once this may not be the case.

Startup Nation plans to podcast a disucssion with Bill Rys, Tax Counsel of the National Federation of Independent Business, about the stimulus proposal. Startup Nation's Rich Sloan sees hope based on stimulus packages that were passed in 2002 and 2003:

Key provisions of the deal include:

•  Increased dollar amount for small business expensing limits from $125,000 to $250,000. This will allow small business owners to immediately write off business purchases and will help small business owners expand their businesses and hire new employees.

•  Fifty percent bonus depreciation deduction. This provides an additional one-year depreciation deduction value to 50% of the value of the property. Bonus depreciation is an incentive for businesses to invest in their business now, providing an immediate deduction for half the cost of the investment.

Sloan contends the small business market is the only economic segment building net new jobs. Any stimulus that promotes the trend should benefit the whole economy over time.
