Ways RSS Feeds Can Benefit Your Business

Are you taking advantage of the technology?

As I mentioned before, Google Reader is one of my favorite features that Google offers because it allows me to read the latest articles and posts from nearly every website and blog that I read on a regular basis all in one place.

This can be a tremendous time-saver and tool to keep you up to date on all of the happenings in your niche, and boost your productivity as a result.

Subscribing to Feeds

It's all about productivity. If you already subscribe to RSS feeds, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Still, RSS hasn't quite reached mainstream status, most likely because it is hard to really understand just how helpful it is until you try it first-hand.

So for those that have not tested the RSS waters yet, go register for a feed reader. Again, I use Google Reader myself (it's convenient if you already have a Google account).

Spend a little time visiting all of the sites and blogs that you read on a regular basis. Also find some that you don't, but perhaps would if you had the time. On each of these sites/blogs, look for the classic feed icon:

RSS Icon

You can usually find it at the top of your browser if a feed is available for the page you are on (in Firefox, it appears on the right-hand side of the address bar). Click it to add the feed to your reader.

Now you have tons of up-to-date articles coming to you in one place that you can check just as easily as your email. Read what you want, skip the rest. Now imagine how much time you will save on a daily basis from not having to surf around.

Offering Feeds

Feeds are not mainstream...yet. Still, you may be surprised at how many people do utilize them. If you operate a blog or a site that runs any kind of articles, you should definitely look into offering feeds. Most blog platforms will feature them anyway.

By not offering feeds, you are missing out on an opportunity to keep customers informed of what your business is up to. You're missing out on a fantastic promotional tool. When you get subscribers, you don't have to worry so much about them coming to you, because you'll be going to them.

Note: FeedBurner is a great way to keep up with subscription stats.

SmallBusinessNewz offers a variety of different feeds including the main one that lets readers receive all articles as they are posted, and more niche ones, like ones for each tag such as Tools and Resources, eCommerce, Marketing, Management, etc.

Feed Reading Options

Google Reader is just one of many options you can use to read feeds. To be honest, it's really the only one I've regularly used and I am not all that familiar with the others. I am a big fan of Google Reader and I have not found any reasons to look for a replacement so far. I do know that there are others that are quite popular though, and you might find one of them more to your liking. Other popular ones include:

1. NewsGator

2. Bloglines

3. Rojo

4. FeedDemon

5. NewzCrawler

6. Omnea Reader

7. Awasu

8. Blog Navigator

9. SharpReader

10. RSS Bandit

Your options are not limited to these. Different readers offer different options, so you may want to do some exploring to find the one most suitable to your needs.

RSS is an invaluable tool for any online business whether you are the reader or the publisher. Try being both to get the most out of the technology.

Search engine optimisation

I can't believe that people still aren't fully realising the potential of RSS feeds, I always try to get all of my clients to publish feeds for their business, its like have ing ther own newspaper dedicated to their own company.

RSS feeds-do they help with SERPS & PR?

If I include RSS Feeds on my website, with the subject being news around North Georgia, Blue Ridge, will that help my SERPs and PR?  Are RSS Feeds likeable by search engine spiders?  I don't want other cabin rental competition feeds on my website for various reasons, but would like local area news.  How would I find non-competing news & topics?

Thanks, Marian,

Nice article, thanks.

Nice article, thanks.  However, one important piece of info left out...what does RSS stand for?

What RSS Stands for

I actually intentionally left this information out simply because I have seen hundreds of articles saying this and I didn't want this to be just another one of those. I shouldn't have taken for granted that everyone else has read the same articles. RSS stands for both Rich Site Summary and Really Simple Syndication.

RSS Feeds

Something else you left out, and you can't use the above reason about hundreds of articles explaining how it's done because there simply aren't any, is how to create a dynamic RSS feed. I have been searching for ways to create a dynamic RSS feed for my website as it is updated with new content for probably a year. Yes, I know that every applicaton under the sun will create a feed for you, but what if you are hand-coding your own website, with ASP, not ASP.net?

The Power Of RSS

As a small startup using the power of RSS you can publish and pull in several hundred if not thousands of hits in your first few months online. Creating a loyal group of readers and visitor to your site in the infancy of a website crucial to your success online. When you're competing with thousands of other sites just like yours how do you make yourself stick out. This allows you to publish your content to anyone who wants it in an organized systematic way. They can read it whenever they want in the reader that they choose. If they are interested in more information a link to your site is provided in the feed. This is a trend that is growing exponentially. Soon it will be expected that any site that publishes content, product updates, reviews, or news will have to have a RSS feed available for their users. RSS

Tim, well put. Donald, I'm sure there is a lot of information I left out. This was not meant to be a technical article. I don't think I'm the right person to discuss this element of RSS. My goal was more to illustrate how the technology itself can benefit your business.

RSS

We use feeds but it seems that the majority of people I speak to dont have any idea what it is never mind what it's potential is. Thanks for the article.

I'm still curious to know more about RSS

Kindly guide me step by step how to use rss reader so that I can easily update my website with latest news.

RSS

We use feeds for our business and our customers.  Customers can be intimidated by a feed because they don't necesarily understand how it works.  Then again, they are the first ones to ask, "How come my news items I put on my website don't appear in search engines and no one reads them?"  This is one of the first things we encourage them to do is to create a feed.

In the Small Business space, FeedForAll is an inexpensive and easy way to create a feed that anyone can manage.

I'm excited for tracking of feeds to become more robust as well as basic end user tools to become more intuitive around presenting RSS data.  For now, we too recommend the Google Reader and it does a pretty good job.
