Small Businesses Not Immune To Malware

Number of threats growing

With any luck, your business is in a safe and secure building - not a lot of "come rob me" signs and that sort of thing.  But cyber security should also be considered, as malware is on the rise and so much important information is located on computers.

According to Microsoft's Small Business Blog, "Security software testing organisation AV Test reported that it saw 5.49 million unique samples of malicious software in 2007 - five times more than the 972,606 it saw in 2006."

The next statement gives Mac users a bit of a break, yet the rest of us are still in trouble.  "Apparently, most of the malicious programs detected by these security organisations are aimed at the various versions of Microsoft's Windows operating system and the vast majority of these are made up of elements from older viruses that have been scrambled to look fresh."

So follow all the standard security precautions, and if possible, see that your employees do the same.  Since work computers tend to be regarded more as replaceable tools than valuable property, this second task may challenging.

Finally, to return to the physical element of security, keep an eye on any discs or laptops your business happens to use; as various government agencies have discovered, these sometimes disappear without explanation.

RE: Small Businesses Not Immune To Malware

If you have a online business, you just cant take the chance that your computer is not secure. But I still see many users in help Forums that are not taking the time to make sure their AntiVirus, Firewall and AntiSpyware are configured properly.

And of course, dont forget your MS updates.
