Sweet Success: Honey Helps Family
If you love your work, you have a big advantage
This small business arose from a disabled son's interest in bees; Anthony's Beehive now supports the family.
Fortune Small Business profiled the tale of the Schwager family of Lawrence, Kansas, and their now-21 year old son, Anthony. The parents experienced the deep concern a family will have about the future care their child will need.
As it turns out, Anthony came up with the path to a brighter future, thanks to his interest in bees. His Anthony's Beehive business runs as a family enterprise, profitable since 2002.
The business started with sales at a local farmer's market, and has branched to local businesses like Walgreens. Along the way, Anthony took part in an entrepreneurship course sponsored by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship.
The course helped him learn the skills needed to keep the business going. Coupled with his ongoing development of new products and flavors, his parents believe Anthony will be a self-sufficient adult.
Anthony's lesson mirrors the common human resources question asked in interviews: If you could do anything you want for a living, what would you do?
Small business entrepreneurs should be answering that question with the work they do each day. A dedicated affection for one's work will be reflected in its output. Doing something they don't enjoy inevitably ends up being demonstrated by the company's performance.
