Landing Pages - Your Site's Best Friend

Optimizing those pages topic of new book

Anyone involved in online marketing should be tweaking the landing pages for their campaigns for best effect.

Whether a campaign involves paid search advertising or an email effort, the destination awaiting potential conversions needs to appeal as much as possible to those visitors.

Tim Ash of SiteTuners knows a lot about the subject - enough to fill a book, Landing Page Optimization.

We talked with Tim about the concepts of landing page optimization he wanted to convey in the book. He sees the landing page as something largely neglected by marketers.

That could be due to landing pages being a difficult issue to handle. Lots of skill sets have to be involved with the optimization process, from copywriters to web analytics.

When we asked him what common pitfall faced marketers in landing page design, Tim said the most egregious mistake tended to be too much information. Marketers need good copy, just not too much to overload the reader.

A clear call to action helps turn visitors into conversions. Let people know that you want them to do something, he said.

Though the reader should pick up plenty of gems from reading Landing Page Optimization, Tim said most of the revelations marketers will experience will come from testing their landing pages. The audience matters most, which makes testing and tweaking based on their behavior essential to success.

landing page syndication

Another method that really works is to create an online flyer for your landing page and have that online ad syndicated to other top directories.  This not only places your ad in other high traffic directories but helps it do better in search engines because the syndication automatically creates link backs to your flyer.Classified Ad Distribution

3 Critical Steps to Creating a Good Landing Page

There are lots of things that are required to create a good landing page.  In my opinion the following three are critical:

  1. The theme (i.e. - look and feel) and content of the landing page must match the theme and content of the ad or link the visitor clicks on to get to the landing page.
  2. The landing page needs to have lots of white space (i.e. - uncluttered) and the content must focus on the central topic only and include a strong testimonial or two.
  3. Present an immediate, strong call to action at the top left or center left of the landing page and include a large button with "Try it now" or something similar.

Obviously, it is also very important to keep the "Try it now" sign up process as simple as possible to minimize drop out.

If you keep these three elements in mind, you will significantly increase your chances for converting visitors to your landing page.
