Being Green On Business Trips

Celebrating St. Patty's by saving cash and the environment

Green pins, green shirts, and green beer - on Saint Patrick's Day, there's a definite theme.  And although it's not exactly the same thing, now seems like as good a time as any to talk about "green" business practices.

A company could, we suppose, install solar panels on its headquarters and trade its vehicle fleet for a bunch of bikes.  In doing so, the company would almost assuredly spend tens of thousands of dollars and (depending on the business) give its employees heart attacks.  Ken Walker suggested some less drastic measures for individual travelers.

"Now when I book a trip, I take a few extra minutes to consider where I'm going," he wrote.  "Most cities these days have good public transportation.  Also, it's usually very easy to find a hotel that is very close to where you're working.  I challenged myself to stay within three miles of my work site, and to walk rather than rent a car or take a Taxi."

Walker continued, "The benefits are enormous.  I've lost weight, I stop and smell more flowers, I notice more restaurants and shops, I save my company money most importantly, I'm not burning as many fossil fuels as I used to."

We'll let you reorder those positive outcomes if you like.  But if you can be gentler on the planet and save money for more Guinness, we'd recommend being green in every sense of the word.
