Technology Management Options

Tight control or a little trust

Suppose you hire a new delivery driver, and the guy uses some barely-legal hotrod as his main car.  You could either let the fellow carry on as usual, or stick in him a company sedan.  Every business has similar choices when it comes to technology and security.

People aren't going to lug their own computers into the workplace, of course, but companies often do dictate what hardware and software gets used.  Afterwards, employees can wind up with identical beige boxes onto which no upgrades or new stuff can be added.  This approach tends to narrow the number of possible threats.

Employees may be a bit more efficient (and happier) when they're given some freedom, though.  To return to the car metaphor: if the hotrod driver is used to taking turns without braking, he may find himself in an accident because the sedan isn't able to hold on.  At the least, he'll have to slow down both his driving and your deliveries.

Which technology approach is right for you is probably going to rest on the quality of your employees.  People who really believe Nigerian princes are asking for their help deserve lockdown modes.  People who spend six hours a day playing on custom-built computers can be trusted a little more.
