When Disaster Strikes...

Will you be prepared?

Are you prepared for the worst? A disaster can destroy or greatly impair your business at anytime. Hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, earthquakes, floods, etc, etc, etc.

It's good to know your options and resources should such a thing occur.
When disaster strikes...If you operate here in the United States, the Small Business Administration (SBA) is prepared to give aid in the event of a disaster.

Take some time and review their Disaster Recovery Plan (PDF) and other resources to educate yourself in case something does happen. If it does, you'll be glad you did.

About.com also has a nice list of articles related to planning ahead for disaster.

I'm sure it's a lot easier to say you're prepared for a disaster before one actually hits, but the more you know about it ahead of time will surely ease the aftermath a bit since you will no doubt have enough problems to deal with.

Scott Smith owner of Cellect, LLC set a fine example of dealing with disaster recovery when he immediately made sure his employees were taken care of after a flood waged $10 million worth of damages on his business. The SBA just honored him with an award for this act.

Great lesson: Remember the people that have helped your business succeed when it comes time for them to need help.

Has your business been through a disaster situation? How did you handle it? What advice can you offer others on how to prepare?

Disaster recovery

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink!

My company Logical IT (Australia) Pty Ltd provides a range of computer related products and services and one of our specialty areas is disaster recovery and prevention (with a focus on data storage and server recovery)

One of our clients asked us about a backup solution and we suggested an automated tape based back up regime. Although our quote was only a couple of hundred dollars for a basic system (it was a small company) they decided that they wanted an even cheaper solution so we explained that they could use a USB flash drive or an external hard-drive but that this was an inelegant solution as it involved no automation of back up tasks.

This client was broken into last year and they stole all the computers and laptops including the machine that still had the external drive attached to it!

They very nearly went out of business and it was only though a stroke of luck that we managed to recover a hard-drive which had become corrupted that had some of their old data on it. Ironically it was this drive which inspired the request for a DR solution in the first place!

Being prepared

Often times, I think it's just the "that will never hapen to me" mentality. And then it happens to them and hopefully they learn their lesson.
