Picking Solid Domain Names

For crap's sake, don't include two periods

For a long time, I wouldn't visit or write about Del.icio.us because its name was simply too annoying to type.  But the site's slowly dropping its periods, and this example at least serves to demonstrate the importance of registering good domain names.

Names should be easy to remember and not difficult to write down.  Try not to make them too long, either - people rarely expect to tap out more than a word or two in order to find things.

Owners should pick something that's representative of their business, of course - Shoes.com might be great for Reebok, but worthless (or at least confusing) for Xerox.  And cover your bases - .com and .co.uk addresses are often both worth grabbing, and you might even consider additional versions depending on the reach of your business.

Rachel Bridge adds another couple important points.  "Once you have bought the name for your business, think about what proxy domains you need to buy.  Proxy domains are website addresses that you don't actually use but that link to your main site through vital keywords that will be picked up by a search engine such as Google.

"Finally, once you have acquired a domain name that works for your business, you must renew it every two years."  Otherwise, you risk losing the address.

That's ok!

Hey Doug!

I always want to send some comments to you about your nice articles - short - simple y clear - but time is my worst enemy. Anyway, I want to tell you that I am 100 % in what you mean. The only problem is that many great names are picked up. My domain name is posicionarsitio because it is a spanish one. That means to-position-a-site but let me tell you before that I look for more than 200 names and all of them were busy.

So, it is a little bit of luck too!!!

Regards

Gregorio

Great advice

Great advice Doug

Crucial but...

Picking up the right domain name it is crucial and very important for you business, but what name are we going to choose if most of the sweet, short and/or keyword rich for any category, topic and niche market is already taken? That's one of the reason why you see long, very often meaningless domain name these days. There aren't much options to choose from.

You're not really aware of your content this time...

Hi Doug,

I am one of your newsletter subscriber and such articles with no research at all would let me think about unsubscribing myself...
I am in the e-marketing since early 2000's, it was then already well understood by everyone that havingalonglawyernamethatcontainshalfofdictionnaryplusseveralnumb3rs.com wouldn't be very easy to remember when coming to the address bar for all users. The thing is that the dictionnary contain 1kkk words and actually there are more than 1000 times this amount of domain names rented... think about that more than 100 thousands firms are renting domain names yearly with only a parking page where they let you know the actual price is the same as the one of your car!
We are not chosing long names because we are all preffering everybody to type 200 chars domains! If you just 'snobbed' del.icio.us because there was 2 periods in the name... Then you are one of those reasons that make the last creativity in this world dissapear to let more place to reebok and such geants. This is the wrongest article I ever rad from you guys and expect from you something more nearby ou reality than this. You guys are suppose to be 'small business news' and not 'why giants always win'. Because as I stated earlier everybody understand plainfully that simple fact that nike.com or shoes.com will be easy for everyone to remember but for your purpose shoes.com is actually appraised around 780,986$ so we are very far away of what any smal business can spend for a domain name.

Sincerely,

Dave

Hello

Sorry these tips didn't help you, but judging from the other comments, they managed to hit a few chords. Perhaps other pieces will do the same for you in the future.

Sincerely,

Picking Solid Domain Names

It is tough to pick up a good domain name today, as most of the ones I lookup are taken. I was able to get both RidgewoodJeweler.com, and RidgewoodJewelers.com for my store.

Creativity and "Snobbing"

I think that finding a domain name that is easy to remember that doesn't have such a high price tag, is perhaps where creativity comes in the most. It certainly takes more creativity than just having some 800 character one. If you sell shoes, you may have to be a little more creative than shoes.com if you want to find one that's reasonably priced.

I don't know that he was "snobbing" delicious. I think his point about that is very valid. I've seen it a million times and I still can't remember where the periods go. Luckily delicious.com redirects to it.

tons of great domains are still available

Excellent article Doug.

Thanks for the wrongest article i ever rad also.lmaooooooo
