In an ideal world, people would be able to quit their jobs, fiddle around for a few weeks, then start something new and become filthy rich.  But if this scenario doesn't describe your current reality, there are a few ways you can balance an old job and a new business.

First, suggests Tony Wright, find some people with whom you can share the load.  He points out that, if no one steps forward to support your would-be company, it may have some basic flaws, anyway.

Once you've got a team, make sure it gets together on some sort of schedule.  If soccer practices or other conflicts keep popping up, everyone can lose interest and motivation pretty quickly.

Wright also brings up some important questions that should be addressed: "What will it take for everyone to dive in full-time?  5,000 active users?  10,000 uniques a week?  Funding?  That should be a shared understanding."

Finally (and we've skipped a few tips), Wright points out, "Be sure you own your startup. I've had the fortune to work in places and companies where there was very clear ownership of 'after hours' work.  If ownership of your personal IP is not clear, do NOT rely on the good will of your employer."
