Pumping Up Sales

Size important in addition to quantity

In the last four days, I've ducked two door-to-door salespeople; it's easier to say "no" (and save time) when they can't even begin a spiel.  But since you presumably have some customers who are already on the hook, there are ways in which you may be able to create larger sales.

Brad Sugars outlined several, and his first step - determining the size of your average sale - is essential.  This way, good customers can be rewarded, hesitant buyers can be encouraged, and you can create long-term goals.

Sugars also suggested bundling your offerings and going for the add-on sale.  People often follow an "as long as I'm here" line of thought that can lead to a little more cash in your pocket.

Loyal customers may even tolerate a price increase.  There are a few shops I completely trust with my car, and I'm not liable to try some random wrench monkey just to save a few bucks.

But Sugars wrote, "If you're just opening your doors, price your products or services on the high side and figure out how to offer more value," and a word of caution may be necessary here.  High prices and unfamiliar faces aren't likely to attract that much interest or goodwill.  A first visit could quickly become a last one if that's the experience you offer.

Try to find a balance of techniques that work for you, and don't forget to always check your peephole before answering the door.
