Making The Best Meetings

Stale coffee and conference rooms aren't the only option

If, at your small business, "meetings" only involve internal discussions between you and yourself, go ahead and skip this article.  But people with at least a few employees might want to think about where to hold meetings, and how many folks they should include.

An article in The New York Times talks about meetings that involve fewer than 50 participants, and in the words of Paul Burnham Finney, generate a bill "often best seen through dark glasses."  Since this is SmallBusinessNewz and the economy's not so good, let's adapt.

Consider whether everyone really needs to be included in every get-together.  Granted, you don't want to make some employees feel left out, but neither do you want to make them feel like you're wasting their time on a regular basis.

In a thought that goes along the same lines, see if you can make meetings more interesting.  Don't rent out the top three floors of a hotel, of course, but maybe order in food from a decent restaurant.  Or - and although this sounds silly, I've heard three different coworkers comment on the weather today - just hold a meeting or two outside if there isn't much technology you need to keep at hand.
