Damaged Merchandise And The IRS

Don't lose (as much) money

It's happened to almost everyone: you get some much-anticipated package, and upon opening it, find that the contents have been bent, crushed, or shattered.  It's unfortunate, and it's also something you should tell (and show) the IRS.

Although it may be a little late for this year, in the future, you can deduct the loss from your taxes, according to Anne Fisher.  And if the item is from overseas, you can write off the import duties, as well.  Just be sure not to forget about the "show" part.

"Documentation is key," said Cym Lowell, a partner at law firm Gardere, to Fisher.  "Photograph the merchandise to clearly show its defects.  Keep copies of all letters you write to the vendor, indicating your efforts to get a refund or replacement."

Also, if the vendor cooperates, remember to declare any payments as income.

Hopefully you won't ever need this information, but at the least, it should save you from wincing whenever you see packages getting tossed around.
