SBA Could Get New Head

Old one asked to take on housing challenges

Love him, hate him, or never heard of him at all, Steven Preston may be leaving the Small Business Administration.  Preston, who served as its head, has been tapped to act as chief of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

John Kerry had this to say about Preston and the SBA, according to Angus Loten: "He's worked hard to right its course and to improve relationships with Congress.  We may have some differences on policy, but he's always been professional, responsive, and dedicated to the mission."

Preston would replace Alphonso Jackson at HUD.  Jackson is leaving due to a scandal, not a promotion.  Yet what remains unknown at this point is who would replace Preston; conversations thus far have centered on his ability to do well in his new position, and not who would do well in his old one.

That may be an okay thing - we would expect to hear a murmur of something if big, bad changes were in store for the SBA.  It would be nice to receive word of big, good changes, though, and a complete absence of news is a little strange.

In any event, Preston's nomination has yet to be confirmed, and no timeframes relating to the matter have been announced.
