Consumers want all the details they can findBefore that customer strolls into your store to make a purchase, there's an excellent chance he or she looked it up online.
The House Committee on Small Business took testimony from several companies for its hearing on "The Role of Small Businesses in Stimulating the Economy." Among the attendees of the morning session: Google Vice President for Online Sales & Operations, David Fischer, who provided comments on the topic.
"Small businesses are increasingly going online to better connect with both existing and prospective
customers," said Fischer. "According to the National Retail Federation, over 92 percent of adults regularly or occasionally research products online before buying them in a store."
His remarks were oriented toward encouraging the use of online advertising to help small businesses attract customers for products and services. Google, as is well known, holds a dominant position in that advertising sector.
The observation about customers and online research should prove instructive for any small business owner. Whether you provide hair shears or haircuts, someone likely took a moment to see what they could learn about you online.
That habit provides an absolutely golden opportunity to reach new customers and reinforce your brand with current ones. Advertising represents one way to reach them; search optimization reflects another.
