Qualified Workers Still Not Beating Down Doors

Despite recession, connections rare

From a business owner's perspective, one of the few good things about a recession might be the job market; imagine all the excellent employees who find themselves in need of work.  Interestingly, though, it seems this effect has yet to materialize.

It's hard to qualify this news as either "good" or "bad" considering the different interests in play.  So whatever your outlook, here's the statistic: Danita Blackwood reports, "Seventy-eight percent of the small business owners trying to hire workers in the most recent National Federation of Independent Business Small Business Economic Trends survey reported few or no qualified applicants for the job openings they were trying to fill."

Things could change depending on the economy, of course; it seems like rounds of layoffs are still occurring on a regular basis.  Also, there are no guarantees that one geographic area (or type of business) won't lie far outside the center of the bell curve.

It seems like this news should send both employers and would-be employees in search of non-traditional ways to connect, however; the standard paths just aren't cutting it.  And even if you don't need any new workers, it wouldn't hurt to monitor forums and other online communities in case some super-qualified individual shows up.

It only makes sense to try pulling at least a few positive things out of the recession.
