You are Your Own Best Advisor

Business lessons are everywhere.

Everybody is a customer. That includes you. No matter how much or how little shopping you do, you must be doing some, and giving somebody your business.

Try this: Every time you deal with a business, whether it be doing some grocery shopping at the Super Wal-Mart, ordering a necklace online, or simply depositing some money into your checking account, evaluate your experience as the customer.

While you're there and as you leave, think about how this business has conducted itself. This will keep ideas flowing in your mind that can help you improve your own business. This is true for both positive and negative experiences, and I'm not even talking about only customer service.

Try to take in their whole operation (as much of it as you can see anyway).

Things to look out for:

- How they treat customers

- How they price certain items

- How they have their store laid out

- What kind of indoor/outdoor signage they are using

- What got you into their store to begin with?

- What got other people into the store?

- How comfortable the environment is

- Do they seem to be converting a lot of sales while you're there? Why? (brick and mortars)

- How well have they branded themselves? Why are you familiar with said brand?

- What kind of special offers do they have?

What is good and what is bad about all of these things? These are just a few examples.

If you keep in this frame of mind when you are in the role of the customer, you can compare your business to their's. This might help bring some clarity to things you can improve upon, or other things that you are already doing right.

You don't even have to leave your home to pay attention to what other businesses are doing. Think about this stuff when you're on the Internet, watching television, listening to the radio, reading the paper, etc.

Business lessons are everywhere. You just have to keep your eyes open to notice them.

Since you said that those of us who have worked with the public in retail or what other area. We should also use that experince in how we conduct ourselves in our business dealings.

Thanks for your the info you provide Chris and keep up the good work a lot of us is taking it in.

Michael

RE: You are your own best advisor

Thank you very much Michael, I'm glad you found the article helpful, and glad to have you as a subscriber!

Who is the best advisor?

Speaking of best advice and advisors I am sure that no one is better than ourselves because we trust our feelings especially when we have tools to make sensible and informed decisions throughout a live. They say that if you plan to express your purpose and your values you can’t afford to miss this. If you are looking for the best advisor, look in the mirror.

Great reminder

How often DON'T we use the God-given grey matter between our ears.  As owners we know our own businesses best but forget to sometimes look at them through the eyes of our customers.  Like many owners, it's probably not far off to say that our "gut" instincts coupled with knowledge & experience have brought the most successes.

RE: Great reminder

Yep, that grey matter is there for a reason :)

Glad I'm not alone!

My hubby and I do this all the time! He's in sales, and I'm a Practical Marketing Expert for small businesses, so we're always talking about the service we received, or whether an ad or logo works. Seems a little strange, but we enjoy it and our debates often result in new ideas for my business.

In my newsletters, I've told my community to do much the same thing. Glad to know I'm not the only one thinking this way...Thanks for the great article!

Stacy

Re: Glad I'm not alone!

Thanks Stacy. You really can learn a lot about what works and what doesn't this way ;)
