Stay Competitive By Pointing Out Unique Advantages

It might be more effective than price-cutting

Given the choice between two products, a completely uneducated consumer is likely to choose the one with a lower price.  So unless you feel like bowing to this and making less money on each sale, try to highlight your product's unique benefits.

Mike Stevens writes, "A friend of mine has long favored a particular brand of frozen tamales that's only available in one national grocery chain.  But recently, the recipe has been changed, and the once delectable beef tamale in this line now features potatoes and 'stringy carrots' as part of its filling. . . .  They're there to provide the same quantity of filling at a lower cost."

Stevens believes the tamale company could have stayed competitive by simply counting on people to love its beef filling.  Every product exists in its own business landscape, of course - perhaps the market for beef isn't what it once was, or the market for a slightly healthier (or at least less beefy) tamale is even larger.

Still, it's smart to consider this sort of thing before slashing prices or making another big change.  Cheap advertising (Stevens suggests the product's packaging or your website) could mention awards you've won, important clients, or just something special you offer without requiring such a risky step.

Speaking of risky, it's almost lunchtime, and frozen tamales are staying off the menu.

About unique advantages

Hi,

As usual, great point of view. I sure the theory is right. Besides, in practice too. But I suggest - at least to some people like me who loves too much its own company - to try to get other people opinion about our company. For me, it is much easier to be helped listening to people from outside than from inside my own enterprise
