Small businesses should participate

We all know the saying about following people off bridges.  Yet more and more money is being spent on advertising, and this looks like the sort of trend in which small business owners might want to participate.

Compared to other types of advertising, the online version is both inexpensive and tightly targeted.  While people have become blind to many types of real-world ads, ones appearing on their computer screens get noticed at least every now and again.

Online advertising is interesting enough that companies will spend $51.1 billion on it in 2012, according to new IDC estimates.  This is compared to the $25.5 billion that was spent last year.

A Smallbiztechnology.com article wisely suggests, then, "To save yourself headache, if you are not collecting email address and building customer profiles start. . . .  Advertising to reach and sell to new customers is important, but it's always easier to reach existing customers than finding new customers."

Drive them to a site or to your store.  Just try not to miss this convenient way of catching people and generating sales.

I couldn't agree more, online advertising can be squeezed into almost any budget. I particularly like what you said about collecting email addresses and customer profiles. When a company is able to track a customer from first contact and on through the sales pipeline and customer life-cycle a simple email list could result in many new and returning customers. Some smaller businesses just use what they have to organize contact information, programs like excel, but companies quickly out grow this. Many businesses use some form of CRM Software allowing them to grow customer data easily. If you business does not currently have some form of CRM then I would suggest to start looking at online CRM, check out the main vendors like
