Are you in a lawsuit-happy locale? If you happen to be planning a major expansion, new rankings relating to states' legal climates may require your attention. In one sense, West Virginia is the worst place in the country, according to the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform, while Delaware is the best.
The ILR came to these conclusions by contacting just shy of 1,000 senior attorneys and asking their opinions. "Unfortunately, West Virginia courts are viewed nationally as overly generous with other people's money, with three of the top seven verdicts nationally in 2007 originating in West Virginia," stated Lisa Rickard, the organization's president.
But that becomes "fortunately" for you, assuming you're not already located in West Virginia and can avoid doing business there. One jurisdiction can alter an entire area's ranking, but Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Illinois also showed up in the bottom five, so, well, you've been warned.
Top states included Delaware, Nebraska, Maine, Indiana, and Utah. The full list is available here if you want to go into further detail.
Tax levels, market conditions, and all other sorts of details need to go into relocation and expansion decisions. Still, rankings put out by an affiliate of the Chamber of Commerce deserve to play a role, as well.
