Hitwise: Coupon Sites Gaining Lots Of Visits

Consumers look for savings to click and clip

The crisis of leadership amid the persistent, devastating rise in gas prices continues to push people to look for cost savings solutions, as coupon websites grab more visitors.

Coupon clipping looks like it's drawing plenty of interest from consumers and brands. In the first quarter of 2008, those free-standing inserts you see in publications were the big year over year winner in a comparison of advertising media segments; coupons are a long-standing staple of those.

But other options for coupon clipping arose over the past couple of years. AOL Shortcuts and Kroger made the grocer's ubiquitous keychain cards an instant way to gain the benefits of coupon offers, for one.

Your customers may be looking for coupons too. Analysis firm Hitwise said the week of June 6 ended with a 56 percent gain in visits to coupon websites compared to the same time last year.

Specific brands took in 60.4 percent of the top 250 search terms used to get to coupon websites, demonstrating the power of a strong brand.

"Retailers can entice purchases by making discounts available to price-conscious consumers as the cost of living continues to increase," Heather Dougherty, research director at Hitwise, said in a statement.

"While discretionary income is shrinking for some households, consumers are still shopping online, but making sure that they find the best deals."

If your business is capable of offering and tracking coupons, those could help with driving traffic and conversions. Valpak has been a staple of traffic to people's physical mailboxes, but sites like RedPlum want to grab that coupon interest.

Small businesses may want to consider coupons too. Google, for one example, offers a feature at its Local Business Center that lets a business generate printable coupons for its listing.

With gas prices leaving consumers reeling, a coupon offer may be a necessity to entice people to make a small business part of their shopping trips. A reasonable offer could lead to a customer becoming a valuable regular, easily exceeding the lower margin of the initial coupon over time.

Free Instant GripOffs Mobi eCoupons

GripOffs, just launched last week, has everything advertisers and users will welcome.  Advertisers create and post their own offers, changing them at will as often as they choose and users go to the GripOffs central mobi site to view the offers and select their preference to be used at their particular point of purchase when they need it.

The main thing the advertisers need to realize is when you're talking mobi, people are still paying for Internet access or for time spent, so they're going to be less likely to be going from site to site to site and especially less likely to go to any site at all if the offers aren't any better than "fitty cent" off of a burger or as one current example shows "$2 savings on Passport Photos" when the regular price is already 50% higher than anywhere else in town.

Cellfire has raised $26 milion over the last three years, has 6 advertisers in Orlando, two of which weren't even aware of their participation, one of those two spoken to yesterday said she still never heard from the company and "has never had any hits from it."

If the advertisers do it right, put it all out there on a centralized third-party location that is easy to use and monitor, the users will come.

And, folks, can we, please, stop encouraging people to actually go to their computers and PRINT MORE coupons.

GripOffs

Is this something that will be rolled out in the UK or is it just the USA?

Scope of GripOffs use

Apologize for the delay in responding as I wasn't aware of the question until now.  We are rolling out globally, in fact, the head of our software design team is from 'across the pond,' your neck of the woods, Chris.  Would you be interested in getting started on the effort there?  Thanks for the question.

And, yes, to any and all - we've only just launched this month and are in the US (Orlando, FL), but have already had interest from people in over 24 countries, so no matter where you live, we are ready for you.  If you are in Brazil, we will present you with the site in Portuguese, or in Hindi, Russian, Mandarin, Hispanic - it's all available and more and with the ease of changing our system instantly, should there be a specific use in a particular region that would differ than the standard application that is showing now contact us and we will work through it with you.  Experiment with it.

Don't forget - what you see on the computer is not the same thing you see on your mobi.  We're getting ready to unleash our blog and get real busy, so stay tuned.  Thanks.  This would be great anywhere, wouldn't it?

Or if you were going there, before you went, you could check to see what was available in the way of bargains and, in fact, may decide to route your journey towards some bargains.  As I say, stay tuned, we'll have the blog up in the next couple of weeks and we want to hear from everybody with any ideas you have to make this the best system of its kind in the world.

GO GREEN GO GRIPOFFS ~

Science

Thanks
