You Mean I Should Have a Plan?

...for marketing?

Some business owners jump into marketing without any plan or clear objectives. For that matter, some don't even have their products "ready for prime time" before they begin marketing.

"Developing a Marketing Plan is nothing more than setting goals and making a to-do list that will get you there," says Ivana Taylor at Small Business Trends. "It's really not much different than planning a party."

I think that is a wonderful way of looking at it. Business owners often build the concept of a marketing plan up in their heads and feel a little overwhelmed.

Simplify the whole process, and you will be able to take it one step at a time.

Goals

Goals are the most important part of any marketing plan because without them, you're just flying in the dark. Your goal is to attract customers, and for those customers, ultimately to buy what you are selling. Obviously.

Start much smaller. What marketing methods do you want to try? Email marketing? Social Media Marketing? Print advertising? SEO? All of the above?

Figure out how you want to market your business. If you lay it all out in front of you in an organized fashion, it will be easier to clearly see what objectives you need to tackle.

At that point, it's virtually a checklist. Don't underestimate the checklist. It keeps you focused and shows your progress and what you have left. It's an invaluable tool.

Execution

You've set your goals and now it's time to execute. Go through your checklist and knock them out. Keeping the whole concept to its greatest amount of simplicity, that's really all there is to it.

There are many more details to work out within each goal, but while executing each one, you can start over and make a brand new checklist - simplifying that.

Not sure how to go about executing certain goals? Read articles. Use forums to ask questions. Network with others in the field. Hire specialists. There's always a way to get it done. And organization is the key to keeping it simple and saving time.

How you choose to organize your goals is entirely up to you and different strategies will work better for different people. Taylor offers a couple of marketing plan templates that are a bit broad, but still can get you on the right track. They will get your wheels turning either way, and that is very important.

Do you have a marketing plan? How did you construct it?
