Read Up Before International Travel

Be prepared for cultural differences.

Going global is a goal for many small businesses, as it signifies true growth.

Naturally, going global will often entail traveling to different countries around the world and networking with other business professionals in these countries.

I ran across a short article at Business Week that points out something that frankly had never occurred to me. I don't personally do much traveling, so it's never really been an issue, but for those of you who do, or intend to in the future, you may want to pay attention.

Business card etiquette apparently differs from country to country. Here in the U.S. there is really not much "etiquette" involved. It's simply an exchange of information. According to WorkEtiquette.co.uk, the United Kingdom has similar practices.

Countries like Russia, China, Japan, and India for example have a little more ritualistic exchanges.

Amy S. Choi at Business Week notes that status should be highlighted on the card, whereas in India, education should be more prominent.

Some places require distinct ways of actually handing the card to someone. It is said to be proper in China to handle the cards with 2 hands in an exchange. In Middle Eastern countries, present your card with your right hand.

Earning respect is a vital part of earning business. When networking in foreign countries, anything that diminishes respect is going to equate to a lot wasted money on travel expenses, not to mention reflect poorly on your brand.

Before traveling, it may prove wise to do some etiquette research for your destination. While you're at it, I wouldn't limit it to just business cards.

If any readers in countries not mentioned would like to share the business card etiquette practices of their homelands, we'd love to hear about them. Or if you've been to other countries and noticed any differences, please share.

I live in China and I

I live in China and I confirm that you need to hand over business cards with two hands. Handing your business card with one hand to your Chinese partner wil display lack of understanding about Chinese business etiquette and will diminish your chances to land a deal.

RE: I live in China and I

Thank you for confirming. It is quite interesting to see the difference in etiquette and culture among different countries.

International Business Cards

A key factor, if only as a sign of respect, is to have a card printed in both your own language (English or other ) and the main language in the country you will visit. This might mean one language on one side and the other language on the other side.

RE: International Business Cards

Hi Tony,

That is a really good idea, that now that you say it seems obvious, but may not even be thought of. I would add that one should make sure any translation is accurate before handing out the cards. Often times online translators can produce inaccurate results, so it would be a good idea to have a professional translator help you.

RE: International Business Cards

The translation is the key area especially if you have a brand name that may need transliteration
