Friends and Family as Staff

Good idea or not?

The topic of whether or not it is a good idea to hire your friends or family members is not a new one, but it continues to be debatable.

Friends and Family as Staff - Good idea or not?Ultimately, it can go either way, but the key is to treat them like any other employee.

The discussion recently came up in a blog post here that pointed out how a business trait like "family tradition" can be beneficial to a company:

For instance, taking a restaurant and running it with family can create a well presentable company that impresses people and creates a greater sense of trust. When you combine it with a business it can be a beautiful thing.

The conversation was continued at Small Business CEO where the author notes, "One benefit of hiring a family member is that you've had a personal relationship with this person for years.  I think this gives you a distinct advantage over hiring a complete stranger."

This may be true, but you may be putting your relationship with that person in jeopardy, should things not work out professionally, and there is the possibility that you will keep them on when they really should be let go, because let's face it - nobody wants to have to fire a friend or a family member.

Still, such a situation can work wonderfully. It happens all the time. JobBank USA has five guidelines for hiring friends and family members that if adhered to could certainly get you started off in the right direction, should you choose to pursue this path.

The biggest thing to remember is not to give them any special treatment and not expect any special treatment from them. Keep the relationship at work strictly professional and separate from your personal lives. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, which is why these scenarios should be approached with caution.

Have you ever hired a friend or family member? How has it worked out?
