Designing The Best Business Card

Because it's a tiny symbol of an entire company

Remember the business card scenes in "American Psycho"?  Every character, from the boring businessmen to the violent weirdo, became amazed by very small pieces of paper.  If possible, try to make similar impressions with the cards representing your company.

No one's saying you should spend $100 (or more) on a half-dozen slips, of course, but try to keep some of the basic design rules in mind.  In terms of function, Yvonne Russell recommends avoiding tiny fonts.  Also, don't forget to include email addresses, your website, and a full physical address including state and zip code.

You can make your cards stand out by going with an unusual size or shape, but don't forget that they should fit well into wallets and rolodexes.

In terms of appearance, avoid strange colors (assuming they're not in some way associated with your business) and out-of-place styles.  A flimsy business card seems like a sign of cheapness, too, so opt for a decent type of paper.

A few more design ideas can be picked up from Steve Rucinski, and our own Chris Crum has covered ways in which cards should be presented.  Have a fun time at the print shop.
