Getting To Know Your Customers

A little personalization may help the bottom line

If you expect people to include your small business when they are out burning $4+ gallons of gas, it may help to connect a little more personally with them.

Personally, of course, does not have to be too personal. You want people to understand that their purchases mean more than an authentication code spewed out of the credit card machine after approving their purchases.

Microsoft's Small Business blog at Office Live Community (sheesh, Microsoft, again with the mile-long names) asked a simple question: how do you get to know your customers?

It's an important competitive question these days. Competition means if you don't know them well, or make an attempt, another business may pull in that conversion regularly instead of you.

Are you asking for a birthday month and day in your signup material for marketing purposes? An emailed birthday greeting could work wonders at reinforcing an existing relationship.

Other ideas should come to mind based on the scope of your business. You don't want to be a nonstop presence in someone's mailbox or inbox, but you should be there when seasons, dates, or current events merit it.

Holiday weekends should be time to remind people of the merits of a tire checkup, for example. Heavy rains may be an opportunity to let customers know you're their for them if they need a plumbing repair, or tree removal.

There's a certain nimbleness needed with marketing this way. Technology helps, and we'd be remiss if we didn't mention email marketing as an effective avenue for delivering more personalized messages.

But you need information from your customers first. Take some time to offer them an optional way to provide it, and follow up when they do. It's brand reinforcement, and hopefully a continuation of the customer relationship. These days, every little bit helps.

Getting to know your customers

I couldn't agree more! Customers, now days, can spend their money any number of places. They want as much bang for their buck as they can possibly get and when they are familiar with you and your business, especially an online business, it takes some of the concern out of the equation. Social marketing is really the newest way to market your business and get to know your customer all at the same time. I've noticed that most of my friends who read this blog have great business opportunities that they're passionate about and these opportunities deserve to be marketed well. I don't know about you all but social marketing is so new that there isn't much out there to help us learn how to use it effectively to market our products. However, I've found a site run by Rodger Baily that is great. He's in the free phase right now so you can soak up some free knowledge and hopfully use it to market your product. Rodger has a unique way of teaching with a "learn as you do" method that is very effective. Getting to know your customers

I agree more with Debbie Morgan when she says, "Social marketing is really the newest way to market your business and get to know your customer all at the same time."   Customers want to feel special and like they are the most important one on your list.  I've learned to do this in a great way for 2 Internet businesses so far!

I've become a Distributor for Send Out Cards and it is a life-saver!  I have all of my customer information saved here and send birthday, business anniversary cards and even Introduction cards for new products that we carry.  To really make them feel they are getting a great deal, I will also send them a greeting card with a special discount code for our Special Customers to obtain items at a discounted price!  The customers have been raving about the cards!

There are thousands of cards to choose from and they are mailed directly from Send Out Cards.  There are also gift cards and gift items that can be sent along with your card.  The cost of a card, including postage, is under one dollar!!  A minimal price to pay for the feeling it gives the customer!

If you'd like more info or would like to send a free card on me, visit my site and then email me at sendoutcards123@cox.net  and I'll set you up with a free gift account.  You won't be sorry, I am addicted to this!www.sendoutcards.com/44307
