Businesses like discount stores, check cashing, debt relief, job placement agencies, and pawn shops made the list.
The list brings to mind a broader point that perhaps the best ideas for new businesses are ones that will help customers financially.
It only makes sense that a business who's sole purpose is to save the consumer money would thrive in harsh economic times.
Of course that's not to say that these are the only businesses that will find success, but it is a factor to be considered when searching for ideas.

Money is a major concern right now for most Americans, business people included. So providing a solution to that money crunch, is where the idea needs to germinate from.

Money is the goal and providing solutions is the cure. Just like Chris said above if you can provide solutions to people's problems then you have yourself a winner of an idea.
I think energy (saving energy) or any business that's related is a great investment at this time. Also, any business that can save consumers money is always a good idea.
So many businesses to choose from. What's an entrepreneur to do?
