Don't be afraid to need, and other ideasMaking a small business viable and enduring demands a lot of those who embark on that road.
The little entrepreneur sees a path where others view overgrowth, thorns, pitfalls, and really big snakes with sharp fangs and all the venom you could ever want. Not every entrepreneur makes it down that path far enough or for long enough to be a success.
Mark Silver said at the Huffington Post that the small business owner needs five qualities to succeed. Strength, it seems, comes from weakness, or at least vulnerability, according to Silver:
Vulnerability is when you are open to letting things in. Want more money? You need to be vulnerable. Need help from others? Vulnerability. Learning about your blind spots, or something new about marketing... yup, vulnerability.
It's the ability to say "I don't know."
We've always subscribed to the concept that no one knows it all and should be willing to say so. Perhaps most people think this is too much of a demonstration of weakness, but having something go horribly wrong out of a stubbornness to seek help may be the death of a business.
Silver feels vulnerability leads to the qualities of creativity, trust/faith, sovereignty, and patience. Everything has its place in small business. People already know about the need for hard work. The little qualities may be the difference makers.

I Agree Completely
David,
Great Post. I Agree completely.
Trying out new marketing strategies and asking someone else for help has helped me gain so much experience which I could not have gained without, as Mark says being vulnerable.
I also agree that I don't know everything. I remember a similar quote as someone saying that the one thing they know is that they don't know everything.
Granted some of those vulnerabilities did cost me but I wouldn't have known or learned otherwise and those mistakes are now a part of my experience.

The ability to say, "I don't know"
I completely agree. My business is new and my marketing budget is small to non-existent. Then I heard about social marketing and how inexpensive it was but I knew nothing about it.
