Senate To SBA: Here's $107 Million

Budget increase more generous than expected

The last round of news about the Senate, small businesses, and a great deal of funding dealt with $101 million that had to go through the Appropriations Committee.  Now, here's some good news: $107 million is on its way instead.

The Senate intentionally went above and beyond the President's original request, and the Financial Services Appropriations Bill will provide the Small Business Administration with $107 for its various programs.  John Kerry and Olympia J. Snowe seem to be the main people deserving thanks.

As for the programs that appear to have come out on top, "The bill increases funding for Small Business Development Centers by 24%, Women's Business Centers by 13%, microloans to $20 million from zero, contracting assistance by 87%, and veterans outreach programs by 62%," according to a press release.

Releases and reports have been less specific about when exactly the money will find its way to small businesses.  Still, it's bound to do so sooner or later, and whether it helps businesses thrive during the recession or bounce back afterward, it'll be a welcome thing in most places.

Also, Senator Snowe implied that "sooner" is likely, stating, "During these challenging economic times, it is critical that the SBA is provided the resources necessary to help small businesses create new or improved products and services, which ultimately translates into thousands of jobs."
