Shocker: Taxes Hinder Small Biz Growth

Death tax and AMT hurt chances to expand

No surprise here in the NFIB report on taxes and their impact on small business owners, who find certain taxes obstructive to expanding their businesses.

Only healthcare and fuel costs rated ahead of taxes in the NFIB Problems and Priorities survey. A couple of taxes, the death tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax, vex small business owners in particular.

"Most small business owners have the entire value of their business in their estate, and when the government automatically inherits 37 to 55 percent of the estate upon the small business owner's death, the family often cannot afford to keep the business going," NFIB said of the death tax.

Inflation and individual rate cuts received blame for the Alternative Minimum Tax reaching into the middle class. As many as 41 million people could be affected by AMT by 2013. AMT came into being as a way to thwart the wealthy from evading taxes, but catches far more people these days.

After these federal taxes, NFIB said in its survey people held concerns about property taxes, tax complexity, unreasonable government regulations, state taxes, cost of supplies, and workers' compensation costs.

Inheritance tax claims bogus...

When asked to provide information on just one farmer who'd lost their farm due to the inheritance tax, the American Farm Bureau could not. Lawyers and investment counselors galore live for nothing more than to help get around the inheritance tax. You cannot prove that it is so onerous to the small business person when so many options exist to circumvent the tax in the first place.

Taxes and still save money

Since taxes are going up and there are so many of them now, small business owners have to look for other ideas on not going over budget. I am a small business owner and I have joined a small business organization called America's Best Companies. www.americasbestcompanies.com This organization not only helps market your business but once you are a member you get discounts on a variety things. This includes a discount on gas, which has been a concern lately with the rising prices. Also, you can even receive 40 to 60 percent off of supplies at the store Staples. This will then save you money on business supplies. There are also many more discounts, too many to name! Small business owners can then focus on spending there money on things that they have to including taxes, and less on other factors.

Taxes and still save money continued

I also forgot to mention, since this is about taxes, that if you are a member of America's Best Companies you will receive a 25% discount on your TaxCut Online federal return prepared by H&R Block. www.americasbestcompanies.com
