SBA Disaster Loans Available In Mississippi

Freezing weather prompted the move

Freezing temperatures that caused crop losses and damages in April in multiple Mississippi counties justified the disaster declaration.

The Secretary of Agriculture found the damage done throughout Mississippi on April 15th so great, it merited calling for federal assistance. Their disaster declaration opened availability of federal economic injury disaster loans to those affected.

"When the Secretary of Agriculture issues a disaster declaration to help farmers recover from damages and losses to crops, the Small Business Administration issues a declaration to assist small businesses and private non-profit organizations affected by the same disaster," Frank Skaggs, Director of SBA Field Operations Center East, said in the statement.

They noted the loans being made available will be for farm-related and nonfarm-related small business concerns, small agricultural cooperatives, and private non-profit organizations of all sizes that suffered financial losses.

Qualifying applicants may receive up to $2 million in loans at 4 percent interest. Terms run as long as 30 years. Farmers and ranchers won't be eligible for this particular program, the SBA noted.

Disaster Assistance

This should be a reminder to all small businesses that many different kinds of assistance are available during disasters. When a disaster does sufficient damage to effect enough homes, businesses and government infrastructure in a given area declaration can be made, first at the State and then rising to the federal government. A “Presidential Declared Disaster” is more than just a press statement, it unlocks $millions in aide for the effected area for rebuilding through grants, loans, tax breaks for disaster loss and other forms of aid. When a disaster affects your business and/or home you should act immediately to apply for every assistance program available (State and Federal) and not wait for your insurance company to make an settlement. In many cases -not qualifying for one program can automatically qualify you for the next level of assistance and possibly from another agency. Even agencies that don't seem to fit your business on the surface may have programs that only apply during disasters (USDA, HUD, VA etc.) To help you case in any disaster or insurance claim: 1. Take a full set of digital pictures before and after the disaster (inside and out). (And before you start cleaning things up). Also take pictures as to clean and make repairs. 2. Make copies of all your important documents and PDF if possible so you can carry it with you. Include all your personal documents (birth certificates, Soc. Security cards, deeds, leases, licenses, tax records etc.) 3. Don’t expect your insurance company to cover more than 50% of your losses if you are successful. 4. You have the right to dispute and reassess your case with any agency, program or insurance company to get the best possible assistance. Over 50% of businesses do not reopen after a disaster. Up to 30% of business that do reopen fail with in a year because they were unaware of full extent of there loss. Hope this helps, prepared people when and if this happens to your business.
