NRF Representative Talks To Congress

"More rebates, please"

If you're concerned that lawmakers aren't aware of small business owners' problems, here's a comforting fact: National Retail Federation Vice President and Tax Counsel Rachelle Bernstein spoke to the House Small Business Committee yesterday.

Politicians have always possessed a remarkable ability to ignore important things, of course, and no promises of action came as a result of the meeting.  It seems nice to know what happened, however, so on we go.

Bernstein stated, "Tax rebate checks are providing some stimulus, but consumer spending remains subdued because of the stresses of declining home values, escalating fuel and food costs, increasing unemployment and weak financial markets.  Consumers are concentrating their spending on the essentials, are more concerned than ever with pricing, and are shopping more on line so they can more easily make price comparisons and save money on gas."

Then came the point that's liable to interest you.  "Based on the economic information that is available, we believe that a compelling case can be made for providing additional economic stimulus legislation," she said.  "If Congress does act on a second economic stimulus package, we believe it should once again include relief for the consumer."

For anyone in favor of this sort of thing, it's time to once again cross your fingers and/or write your representatives.  And all small business owners should at least be pleased a dialogue is taking place.
