If you publish a business blog, chances are you have RSS feeds as well. There is also a good chance that many of your readers pretty much read your content exclusively through these feeds.

If these readers are reading your content exclusively through feeds, they are probably doing the same thing with many other blogs and news sources, which is why you have to take some measures to make yours stand out enough to get their attention.

Many people (myself included) are subscribed to a whole lot of different content, and there is no way they could possibly read every article from every source.

This is something you want to keep in mind when writing your blog posts. You may not even always think about the fact that you're also putting out feeds, but if they're being created as you post, start off by making sure your title is appealing.

It's the same principle as email marketing. You need an engaging subject line to get people to open it. Why would it be any different for RSS feeds?

Thankfully, spam isn't the issue with feeds that it is with email, but feeds generally come at a much greater frequency than email newsletters, so there can still be quite an abundance of information to wade through.

There are some good tips in this article from Loren McDonald at EmailLabs.com about improving subject lines. The article was written with email in mind, but you can apply most of them to blog post/feed titles as well.

Don't miss out on a larger readership just because of bad subject lines. There's no telling what kind of business you are missing out on as a result.
