Wired Reaches Out To Small Biz

New site big on name, like on content

The tech magazine launched what it calls an experiment in crowdsourcing with Wired Small Biz, a small business portal.

Wired hooked up with American Express and its OPEN program, and with business hardware maker Brother for the Wired Small Biz site.

We'll toss a little complaint at Wired to start: videos may be the cool thing these days, but busy small business people don't always have time for them. Wired's video by Jeff Howe on crowdsourcing probably will be ignored by visitors who could read a text version in rapid fashion.

On to the features. Along with dedicated content and a video library, Wired Small Biz presents news from the signature publication. A box of community news links powered by fellow Conde Nast property, Reddit, links to various stories of business interest. Those range from features on Forbes.com to solo bloggers.

Wired also started collecting how-to guides from its How-To Wiki site. A handful of guides on topics like Google AdSense and backing up valuable data.

The site will demonstrate its value based on user participation. Right now it's light on content and far less useful than simply searching the Internet for advice on a topic.

Wired is Not

I pick up Wired once a year or so, trying to talk myself into liking it. I don't. I pretty much hate it. I am a small business person, and have been for many years. But Wired isn't geared to business. It is geared to young, adrenalin overloaded men. For instance, a recent cover article was about How to Become Known on the Web. But the Big Point of the article (I hate using the word "thrust" here) is that you have be a young, gorgeous woman who can get photographed with famous rich men. Just what the blazes does this have to do with any size of business? And the "biz wiki"? I just tried it. The links don't work. I suppose they will work eventually. But -- good grief -- a site focused on technology can't get a link right? Maybe they aren't so focused on technology at all.

i have been thinking of

i have been thinking of advertising on wired. Thanks, Peter Roesler President of a Florida Web Design company
