Start a business, but make it one that customers wantThe wisdom of the movie 'Robots' comes across when Rodney Copperbottom says, "see a need, fill a need."
It's something all entrepreneurs should do when embarking down the small business road. One may have the greatest product or service ever conceived, but if there's no demand for it, the business won't go anywhere.
Small Business Trends Radio carried an interview with BizSugar founder John Holsen; he touched upon the importance of meeting the needs or wants of the likely customer base in his talk.
"Before starting your business, you need to ask yourself that question - and answer it with a 'yes'," he said of determining what need the business will meet.
He also recommended staying focused on the path that leads to fulfilling the expectations raised by the business. Other opportunities may arise, presenting a distraction, but entrepreneurs run the risk of taking on too much if they accept the challenge of ones that don't follow what the business is intended to accomplish.
Getting their requires some flexibility on the marketing side, Holsen also advised. There's no one path to success, be it print ads or online marketing. Testing and documenting results will demonstrate what will work best on achieving the goals of the business.

Filling a need
Having a need yourself is a great way to realize you can fill that need for others too.
My safety and security web site grew out of a need my family had to be a little bit safer after an unwanted intrusion by a burglar.
You see, he wasn't coming in our house to get our things, he was coming in to get our teenage daughter who was home alone that night while the rest of us went out for a game of putt putt.
If we had a stun gun or taser in the house for her to use, she wouldn't have felt so vulnerable holding her brother's baseball bat in one hand and the telephone in the other.
