To better your business, you might spend more money.  Others would suggest that you spend smarter.  Or you could combine both options and, like many small businesses are doing, increase your budget for information and communications technology.

According to data from Compass Intelligence, "ICT vendors will find the most revenue growth among Small & Mid-sized Businesses, where these firms are expected to increase their ICT spending by between 6%-8% annually through 2012."

This rate of growth would have small businesses spending $280 billion during that last year.

The trend makes some sense, as large businesses must make enormous efforts in order to adopt new technologies.  Small businesses can often swap a few computers, retrain a handful of employees, and be good to go in much less time.

So is it worth it to be on the cutting edge?  Kneko Burney, the president and CEO of Compass Intelligence, stated, "[B]usinesses large and small will need to become more efficient and innovate if they are to survive the current crunch."

Ask the early users of Windows Vista and you'll often get a different sort of answer, however.  This is simply a pattern small business owners should keep in mind as they work out their own solutions.
